Fear of the dentist
Some people find dentists very frightening
We all know that having regular dental check ups is important for our health. But for some people visiting the dentist is very frightening.
Not everybody has the same sort of fear of dentists. You could be slightly nervous, very anxious or even have a phobia about dentists.
Overcoming the fear
If you are afraid of the dentist you probably avoid going for check ups. This makes you more likely to develop problems in your mouth. Which ends up by making you even more afraid of visiting the dentist.
The good news is that there are several organisations and sympathetic dentists who are willing to help you overcome your fear.
Tips for seeking help
- Make a list of the reasons why you don’t visit the dentist. Sort the list in order of importance and talk through these fears with a friend.
- Decide what you need to do to overcome these fears. This is different for everyone but may involve getting professional help.
- Find a sympathetic dentist. Ask around for recommendations or look for a dentist who offers anxiety management.
- Building trust with your dentist can take time. You may want to make a first appointment just to talk about your fears.
- There is no reason to be embarrassed about the state of your teeth or about your fears. The dentist will have seen most different dental problems before.
- Remember you’re not alone - many other people are also trying to overcome their fear of the dentist.
